The Kia Rio5 tops the list for Best Small Car of 2011. A gem of a little car, it’s well-proportioned and stylish, and looks like it should cost more than it does.

LAST month I reported on the 2011 Cars of the Year, as selected by my friendly and knowledgeable colleagues in the Automotive Journalists Association of Canada.

Something I neglected to mention: they got it all wrong.

Well, perhaps not all wrong, but certainly some of the award winners had me scratching my head a little.

For instance, on what planet is the Hyundai Veloster the best Sports/Performance Car for under $50,000?

Admittedly, the little Hyundai is a decent little coupe - efficient, interesting to look at and not bad to drive with the stick shift - but if it's the best factory hot rod you can get for under 50 large then I'm a professional sprinter because one time I ran for the bus.

The problem is partially that AJAC limits the eligibility of contestants to vehicles that are all-new or heavily redesigned. in the real world, just because a manufacturer releases a new car doesn't mean it doesn't have to compete with all the cars that were introduced last year.

What we need then is some unbridled strident opinion, unencumbered by the fetters of "facts" and "research." here they are, the 2011 cars of the year as picked by a select panel of judges; namely, myself and the cat, who apparently wants to help by constantly walking all over the keyboarsvgkljgsd.

- best Small Car: The Kia Rio5

Also perhaps deserving of a separate award marked "Most Improved," the Kia Rio5 is a gem of a little car, and finally fixes the most glaring flaw in Kia's lineup: the lack of a good entry-level car.

Actually, "good" nothing, this Audi-esque pipsqueak is a great buy. First off, it's well-proportioned, stylish, and looks like it should cost more than it actually does.

Available 17-inch alloys bring the bling if you must - and ruin the ride - but even in base-and mid-level trims, it's a handsome little vehicle.

Better yet, the ride and handling is that of a much larger car. The cabin is spacious and airy and the level of available technologies is astounding. Bluetooth, heated seats, a back-up camera, USB integration: all are available as standard or as options without cracking the $20K barrier.

Kia's UVO voicecommand system actually works - unlike some others we could name. There's also an upcoming Eco option that will allow you to add fuel-saving start-stop functionality, a first for such an entry-level car. but then, perhaps the Rio5 isn't so entry-level after all.

- best Family Car Under

$30K: The Subaru Impreza Hatch

In a world where the evidence points more and more to a society that's falling out of love with the automobile (not me!), it's still not quite entirely practical for everyone to do without one. The young folks these days with their rapping Biebers and their Nintendo X-Stations might prefer to twitter along on their fixies, but at some point even Millennials find themselves with a baby on the way.

Babies are small, but they come with a lot of attachments. Er, accessories. What's more, you don't entrust your valued offspring to the back seat of mom's hand-me-down 1987 Civic sedan, which is now composed of 38 per cent rust and held together only by the ectoplasmic will of Soichiro Honda. No, you buy your first "real" car.

If you're smart, this is what you should get: the completely redesigned Subaru Impreza Hatchback. now divorced entirely from the WRX/STi rally-monsters, the new Impreza is lighter and more fuel efficient with an all-new 2.0-litre boxer engine and available CVT automatic transmission.

Vastly improved over the outgoing model, the new Impreza is styled conservatively inside and out, but that should mean it'll age well. Let's face it, being a Subaru, you're going to be driving this thing for a while. The rear door openings are enormous, perfect for loading and unloading your squalling progeny, and the rear hatch is capacious even with the seats up.

It's also fun to drive with nicely weighted steering and slot car Subie grip. Safety ratings are excellent across the board at Subaru, and the AWD should make you feel even more secure.

So let's review: practical, capable, durable, safe, comfortable, spacious, fun to drive, cheap to run, good resale value and go-anywhere sure-footedness. Job done.

- best Family Car over $30K: Volkswagen Golf Wagon TDI

As someone who constantly complains about all the good cars they get in Europe that we don't get over here, I have to fall silent when it comes to the VW TDI range. Yes, it is possible to buy a small, spacious diesel wagon, and you can even get it with a manual transmission if you really want to don a beret.

VW is pretty much the lone champion of diesel passenger cars in North America, and their efforts just keep getting better. The TDI engine in the Golf Wagon pulls like a train from low rpms, and is smooth and quiet on the highway and around town. in fact, the only bad manners the car displays is a tendency to boil the tires off the line as there's so much torque.

There's much to like

about the car itself, especially if you're a fan of the spartan teutonic style, but really, this rig is all about fuel-economy. One caveat, finding a gas station that sells diesel can be a bit of a hassle at present, and there will inevitably be a lineup of JDM Mitsubishi Delicas in front of you when you do get there. however, such inconveniences are minor when you consider that the time between fuel stops falls into the "Oh look, it's February, time to fill up again," category.

- best Performance Car For under $25K: The Nissan Juke

This is a weird one but hear me out: Nissan's little toadlet has a face only Jar Jar Binks's mother could love, but talk to anybody who's actually driven one and, well, let's just say beauty is in the eye of the steering wheel holder.

Any automotive designer's Holy Grail is to craft an entire new segment of vehicles that sends the competition scrambling to catch up, and no doubt that's what Nissan's gurus were up to when they came up with this Sports Activity Crossover Sports Cross Utility Active Sporty Cross or whatever the hell they're calling it.

But when the marketing guys popped off for lunch, all the nerdy engineers snuck in and built one of the best (if ugliest) driver's cars around. with a 1.6-litre turbo that just begs to be revved, hyperactive steering and rally-car cornering, the Juke is the car the Mini Countryman is trying to be - and the Nissan is half the price.

Best Juke to get for under $25K? how about the base SV front-wheel-drive stick-shift model for the same price as a moderately-equipped Versa. Tuck some of the cash you saved aside and wait for the upcoming NISMO motorsports upgrades, like lowering springs for better handling and software updates for more power.

- best Performance Car $25-50K: The Subaru WRX

It's an open secret that I've got a soft-spot for Subaru. in the Canadian market where all-weather capability actually counts for something, the WRX is rightly deserving of such affection: not only is it blisteringly fast, but it's also blisteringly fast under any conditions.

Obviously, Subaru's STi is the king of the dirt hill, but the WRX remains the performance bargain at just over $32K to start. What's more, it gets slightly better fuel-economy than its bigger brother and the insurance is cheaper.

Compromises? Oh, there's plenty. The WRX is a bit rough around the edges and the interior won't win any design awards. however, for usable everyday performance, you can't get more bang for your buck.

- best Performance Car over $50K: The Ford Mustang Boss

Technically speaking, the Boss tucks in at just under 50K, but if you're going to buy 444 horsepower worth of rear-drive muscle car that's dubbed "the Boss," you don't buy it without checking the box on the optional sport seats and limited-slip differential packages.

So, performance? well, it don't say Boss on the side 'cause Ford was marketing this car to Bruce Springsteen fans. It says "Boss" because it's in charge. Emphasis on "charge."

The BMW M3, the Mercedes-Benz CL AMG, the Audi S4: these are all fast, luxurious German performance coupes that have had to go and hide in a corner because the bluecollar Yank is making fun of them. Never mind muscle car, the Boss Mustang is a proper track-prepped race car capable of embarrassing much more costly metal.

- best Luxury/Prestige Car: The Nissan Leaf

While I toyed with the idea of placing these laurels 'pon the hood of a big diesel Mercedes with all-wheel drive, the concept of prestige has changed somewhat over the years. Specifically, a big, black S-Class is just going to send the message that you're a limo driver.

Drive around in an allelectric Nissan Leaf, however, and people are going to stare. and maybe even applaud.

Admittedly, it's not a very good-looking car or even particularly distinctive. It looks a bit like frog DNA was spliced into a Versa.

However, even folks who know nothing about the automobile know exactly what the Leaf is and what it does.

Drawbacks? well, the limited range might be a bit of an issue if you live far out of town. other than that, it's basically a normal compact car that you just happen to plug into the wall. It's a bit expensive, but most of all, very exclusive: mere money won't get you one of these, you had to be paying attention early on.

- Green Car of the Year: a Dodge Challenger SRT8 392 and a Transit Pass

Self-explanatory. take the bus Monday-Friday, drive the 392 on Sunday, burn less gas than your colleague who daily commutes in a Prius.

Not much less, but still. ? best Car of the Year: The Cadillac CTS-V Wagon

Okay, so perhaps there's a slight limit to the practicality of a rear-wheel drive, manualtransmission, 556 h.p. station wagon. also, the chances of you ever actually glimpsing one of these things on the road are somewhere between sighting bigfoot and seeing Elvis riding a unicorn.

There's also a running debate in the auto-journo world as to whether this car is a cynical PR exercise, designed to win over kooky motoring journalists with a car that only a lunatic would ever really buy. Cadillac is making some absurdly low number of them, and reputedly has plans to sell hardly any.

Here's the thing though: three decades down the road, when electric diesel hybrids rule the Earth and everybody telecommutes using their iBrain anyway, the CTS-V Wagon will be the "Do you remember?" car. It's this decade's Hemi 'Cuda/Buick Grand National/Supra TwinTurbo, and I love the fact that it even exists.

- best SUV: The Mazda CX-5 It may seem the height of conjecture to give the award for best SUV to a car you can't even buy yet, but the early results are in, and it's easy to put together a sketch of Mazda's upcoming small crossover. Spoiler alert: it's going to be good.

Now, Mazda's old crossover wasn't the greatest car in the world; it was just a Tribute. in fact, it was just a Ford Escape with the word Ford crossed off and Mazda written on it in crayon. This new car is 100 per cent pure Mazda, and that means a little more zip.

So it's going to handle like a biggish Miata and boogie through the curves like Alexandre Bilodeau through the moguls: we'd expect that. what you might not be expecting is Mazda's host of clever new fuel-saving technologies.

Dubbed Skyactiv, this entire suite of tech covers everything from highcompression engines to more direct feeling automatic transmissions to a Lotus-like focus on weight savings. Having driven the partialSkyactiv Mazda3 recently, I can tell you that this new crossover from Mazda should be good, clean fun.

iTWire – Lexar claims industry first with 256GB CompactFlash card

Stephen Withers Monday, 09 January 2012 15:04

your IT - Home IT

Fed up with changing your camera's memory card? how does a quarter of a terabyte sound?

Lexar officials say the guaranteed minimum transfer speed of 60MBps makes the new Lexar Professional 400x CompactFlash cards suitable for 1080p video and taking photos in quick succession.

The cards come in 64GB, 128GB and - in an industry first according to the officials - 256GB versions. The smaller two go on sale this month for $316 and $537.50 respectively, with the 256GB card to follow by midyear.

"More professional photographers and enthusiasts are embracing the fact that they can capture high-quality images and HD video with their digital SLR. as a result, they're shooting longer and longer, and need a storage solution that won't interrupt the creative process," said Manisha Sharma, Lexar's director of product marketing for cards.

"The new capacities of the Lexar Professional 400x CF card empower photographers to just keep shooting, without the need to change cards or risk missing once-in-a-lifetime shots or footage."

The cards include a copy of the Image Rescue program to help recover photos in the event of card corruption or mistaken erasure.

Types of Landline Phones

The market is full of landline phone manufacturers and service providers. the types of phone you are going to select will depend on both the service you want to have and the telephone set you use to avail the service.

As far as the sets are concerned, there are two types, corded and cordless. Both these types of sets are available in desktop and wall mounted variants. the corded phones restrict you to one place only while the cordless set allows you to move around your place while talking. thus you can receive a call in the kitchen and take the phone to your bedroom if it's private. Another advancement in telephony architecture is 'multiline connectivity'. this means that your landline can receive two calls simultaneously and you also have two receivers. you can either put one call on hold while you take the other one or someone else can receive the second incoming call from the other receiver. thus, the chances of missing any important calls are reduced. moreover, multiline phones allow conference calling whereby you can connect to five other numbers and have a conference meeting without having to move out of your office.

Technological progress has led to the introduction of very unique landline options. These make use of advanced telecom infrastructures that allow extremely cheap long distance calls and true landline versatility.

VoIP phones are the most important upcoming landline phones of today's world. These landlines carry voice and picture over internet protocols from one point to the other. the telephone sets are expensive, a one time investment but the charges per call are almost none. the only expense incurred is the monthly internet service charge. These phones are ideal for technology based businesses like technical assistance providers, telemarketing companies and multinationals who regularly communicate with their offices in other countries. VoIP sets are expensive because they are incorporated over PABX systems. A PABX is an independent exchange system, implemented in large organizations that have one universal number and extensions to the hundreds of different phones in the offices world wide.

ISDN phones are another advanced telephony system. ISDN means 'Integrated Service Digital Network'. These landlines carry both voice and data, thus they allow fax and voice calls from one single platform. moreover, you can receive a fax and talk on the phone simultaneously. they are ideal for small and medium enterprises who do not have too many international calls but a lot of local business.

Described above were some of the most common types of landline phones available in the market today. There are others but not to popular either because they are tough to use or way too expensive to compete in today's market.

Talkit – The Cheapest and Best Home Phone in Canada

Talkit.ca is a company located in Hamilton, Ontario Canada which offers the best value in a Canadian Home Phone offering I have seen any where I first became aware of Talkit in September 2009 and got the service installed not too long thereafter. Since the service was so inexpensive I decided to get 2 lines installed as we have young adults living at home as well as an almost teenage daughter.

The Talkit.ca Canadian Home Phone service requires a Cable or DSL modem since it is VOIP based and at the time we had Cable and the service has worked without incident since then. Even the transition to DSL over dry-loop was flawless. We currently use start.ca out of London, Ontario and the up-time has been 100% so far. By the way, dry-loop refers to using the telephone company phone line to provide the signal when you do not have an active standard pots (plain old telephone service).

The Talkit.ca VOIP service is a VOIP service similar to all others - VOIP stands for Voice Over Internet Protocol. VOIP simply uses the Internet to access the telephone switches instead of the copper wire that the standard telephone system uses. All VOIP providers will have a device similar to a modem that connects to your Cable or DSL modem into which you connect your telephone devices. to use the service, picking up any of the telephones connected to this device you will hear a dialtone generated by your VOIP device indicating it is ready for you to place a call. once you have dialed the number, it connects through the internet to the VOIP providers chosen partner to the telephone switch and your call attempt begins.

The Talkit.ca service compares in functionality to other VOIP providers such as Vonage or those offered by Cogeco or Shaw to name a few, but the comparison stops here. the service itself works flawlessly, I can't speak for the competitors VOIP service since I don't subscribe to them. Pricing is however another matter. once you purchase the equipment for $79.99 and pay $59.99 for the service for one year and $30 for porting your existing phone number (this is an optional fee - if you simply use the free phone number provided by talkit.ca the porting fee is not necessary) you are all set and do not need to pay anything else for an entire year the following features are included in the $59.99 fee: Call Waiting, Call display, Voice Mail, 3 Way Calling and Call Forwarding Another very useful feature is the ability to have a text message sent to your cell phone containing the date, time and caller ID phone# of the party calling whenever a voicemail message is left on your talkit.ca home phone service.

The home phone service also offers another great benefit: FREE LONG DISTANCE IN CANADA Just dial the area code and phone number of any Canadian person or business and you will be calling them for free any time 24/7 with no limit placed on the length of the call For US and International Long Distance talkit.ca has an offering that you will find quite inexpensive and you will find it is usually cheaper than any competitive offerings out there.

For more information on talkit.ca the service I feel is the best Canadian Home Phone Service available, visit my link here: talkitreview.com

Crimson (USA) LLC Announces New Colors and Finishes Have Been Added to Its Hugely Popular Aluminum Frame Case (AFC) for iPhone 4/4S Product Line

LOS ANGELES, Jan. 24, 2012 -- /PRNewswire/ -- Crimson (USA) LLC, a rapidly growing international provider of iPhone, iPad, iPod, and MacBook accessories, today announced an exciting expansion to its Aluminum Fame Case (AFC) product line for the iPhone 4/4S.

Available online (crimsoncase.com and the through the Crimson Amazon store) and coming soon to a rapidly growing list of resellers around the globe, the AFC is a highly secure, jewel-like enclosure that delivers extremely high levels of protection and aesthetics, worthy of the iPhone 4/4S itself.

"When we first launched the AFC, we thought we'd have a winner on our hands. but the response from both users and the press has been virtually overwhelming," said Ben Yang, CEO of Crimson. "So, we did what comes naturally to us. we took a great product and made it even better. Based on feedback from our users and resellers, we have expanded the AFC line...not just with new colors, but with new finishes as well including Chrome and an absolutely beautiful 24K gold-plated edition that has to be seen to be appreciated," he added.

ABOUT THE ALUMINUM FRAME CASE

Weighing in at only 19 grams and CNC machined from aircraft-grade aluminum and engineering-grade resin, the AFC provides much needed protection without adding significant weight or bulk. The frames of the case cover the edges of the front touch screen and back glass plate of the iPhone 4/4S which, when combined with robust resin corner guards and integrated shock absorption, means that it is fully protected. Best of all, the AFC provides this protection while revealing – not concealing – the beautiful design and engineering of the iPhone 4/4S itself, leaving the camera, as well as all ports and buttons, open and fully accessible.

THE INEVITABLE ANTENNA QUESTION

The AFC provides its protection without touching the sensitive, side-mounted antennas of the iPhone 4/4S. Blocking of these antennas is so often the source of reception loss encountered with other aluminum case designs.

Saudi hackers release Israelis’ credit card details

    Sci-Tech TweetShare

Saudi hackers released the credit card information of hundreds of thousands of Israelis online.

Members of the Saudi hacking ring Group-XP took credit for the release of the information on Jan. 2. The information, including credit card details, the holders’ names, addresses, phone numbers and national identification numbers, were posted on a popular Israeli sports Web site.

Calling the posting of the information a “gift to the world for the new year,” the hackers said they hoped it “would hurt the Zionist pocket,” according to Ynet.

The information reportedly came from Jewish Web sites from which Israelis made purchases, as well as a Web site for making donations.

The Bank of Israel released a statement saying that the approximately 15,000 credit card holders affected by the hacking will not be responsible for fraudulent charges based on the incident.

    Lithium Ion Battery Well-being

Battery wellness is a term I had never ever heard of just before. Maybe which is why I often appear to be kill batteries a lot quicker than any one I know. My laptops and cell phones often locate methods to kick the bucket following only a yr of existence or so, although my friend’s batteries are even now keeping at least half their cost for identical versions. then I heard about this factor referred to as battery wellness, which at 1st made me chuckle. I imagined it was a joke, batteries remaining likened to people, whose routines are frequently the identifying element in how nutritious they are. how can a battery be unhealthy, I imagined? ahead of I heard of battery wellness, I had imagined I just stored gaining lemons… Sickly, infectious batteries that never know how to retain their cost. Sad to say, that wasn’t the circumstance. the challenge I’ve located, lies with me Apparently there are certain practices a man or woman should utilize in buy to retain their battery nutritious. Go figure. They’re detailed below… six easy to comply with measures that when you utilize, will enormously improve the existence of your battery, and give your battery the wellness it deserves!!

Recommendations on preserving your battery nutritious:

Laptop computer batteries and any type of lithium ion batteries are High priced, and probably not going to drop in price tag anytime shortly. here are a few ideas on how to increase the wellness of your battery so you will not, like I did, finish up having to regularly drop a cool $100 for new lithium ion batteries.

Tip 1) You in fact have to use your battery. Seems basic and stupid, I know. But when I 1st started out making use of laptops, I just left it plugged in all the time. a battery, in quite a few respects, is just like the human entire body. It wants to be exercised each now and yet again, and you can’t just allow it sit there stagnating and losing absent.

Tip 2) Totally drain and entirely cost the battery each two to 3 weeks. This should not be that difficult to do. for some purpose that I have not figured out, batteries like to occasionally be taken to the edge.

Tip three) Totally cost a new battery just before making use of it. This one particular is a tip that most of us know currently. Brand name new batteries need to be damaged in a bit, not in contrast to a auto engine, just before normal use can ensue with wheel chair lifts.

Tip 4) if you happen to be at any time not going to use your battery for a extended period of time (let’s say three weeks), consider it out of the laptop and store it someplace cold. This way, it will not be in hazard of losing absent inside of your laptop. This is a tip that I need to have performed a extended time in the past as an alternative of just leaving it in the computer although managing the cord from the wall.

Tip 5) Keep absent from overwhelming temperatures. This is not just for the wellness of your battery. This will assist with the wellness of your full laptop. Really don’t leave your laptops in places like autos. Just never

Tip 6) there are some fairly excellent computer packages out there that increase and observe the wellness of your battery, letting you know precisely how nutritious it is and when it truly is expected to decline. They’re easy to locate if you seem for them.
